Guess the Contact Angle: IPA Wiped Aluminum

As part of the Guess the Contact Angle series, we have brought you a new video that highlights best practices when cleaning material surfaces with IPA wipes and we will ask you to "guess" the contact angle measurement after the surface has been cleaned.

The contact angle featured in this demo is formed by a water droplet deposited using the Surface Analyst 5001 on a piece of aluminum with a smooth surface that has been 'treated' using a manual IPA wipe.

Here we are — at a suspended moment in time. This is the angle that will be measured to calculate a contact angle. Go ahead — grab a piece of paper and jot down your best guess regarding the measurement of this contact angle.

Contact Angle Answer

Have you recorded your guess?

How did you do? Did you come close to guessing the actual contact angle measurement or were you off? Keep in mind this was primarily a learning exercise and remember that there is no single “best” value for a contact angle. The ideal water contact angle measurement will depend on your particular application.

Contact angles provided by the Surface Analyst line of products enable manufactures to gather intelligence about their material surfaces and control surface cleaning variables that are frequently overlooked. Learn how companies are utilizing this technology to develop innovative surface engineering solutions. Companies are now empowered to analyze and monitor surface quality throughout the entire product lifecycle from R&D through New Product Introduction (NPI) — including production and quality control.
